How to Heal Regret

Click here to skip to guided questions that heal regret.

Has anyone ever told you “You should move on?” It’s a lot easier said than done.

The past can feel like a persistent shadow, sticking with us even as we try to turn away.

When our regret lingers, there is an question that implies something important and upsetting.

“Why didn’t I spend more time with him before he passed away? Because I was careless.” or “Why did I tell her I wasn’t available? Because I am selfish.”

We might be afraid we will repeat the past, or the idea that we are responsible for something is unbearable.

So how do we overcome our regret?

We need to answer that “Why didn’t I?” question with self-compassion, honesty, and information.

The questions provided here can help us think about our past from multiple angles, and consider as much information and evidence as possible.

As you consider each question, it may help to pretend that you’re talking to a friend going through the same thing you are.
